FAQs

What is the PlastiProof™ Oral Fluid Microplastic Test?

PlastiProof™ is the world’s first oral fluid test designed to detect and quantify microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs) in human saliva. Using cutting-edge microscopy and advanced imaging, the test provides valuable insights into your environmental plastic exposure.

How does PlastiProof™ work?

Through advanced microscopy and our specialized oral fluid collection kit, PlastiProof™ detects both the presence and size of MNPs in saliva.
Drawing on research from the American Chemical Society and Academia Sinica, your results include a likely exposure vector — identifying whether detected microplastics originated from air, food, or direct contact.

Why is a dried blood spot card used for oral fluid collection?

We use a dried blood spot (DBS) card because it contains a drying agent that helps the saliva sample dry quickly and evenly. These cards have been verified to be plastic-free, ensuring no contamination from the collection materials — a feature not yet available in other dried spot technologies.

Why do the results include particle size instead of plastic type?

The technology powering PlastiProof™ is designed to detect the size of contaminants rather than their exact chemical type.
Particle size is vital for two reasons:

  • It helps identify the source (vector) of exposure — such as air, food, or direct contact.
  • It indicates the potential biological impact, since smaller particles (nanoplastics) can penetrate deeper into body tissues than larger ones.
Why test saliva instead of blood or urine?

Saliva is a non-invasive and highly reflective medium for assessing environmental exposure. Testing oral fluid avoids discomfort, captures early-stage exposure levels, and allows for simple, repeatable collection without clinical assistance.

Who should take this test?

Anyone interested in understanding their environmental exposure to plastics can benefit — especially individuals living in urban areas, working in industrial settings, or pursuing detoxification and wellness programs.

How should I prepare before taking the test?
  • Avoid eating, drinking, or smoking for at least 2 hours before collection.
  • For best accuracy, perform the test first thing in the morning before brushing your teeth.
Can I drink water before the test?

Avoid drinking anything, including water, for at least 30 minutes before collection to ensure sample purity.

What if my test card becomes contaminated or I make a mistake?

Do not use a contaminated or damaged card. Contact PlastiProof™ Support for a replacement kit. Avoid touching or spilling saliva outside the sample circles.

How long should the sample dry?

Lay the card flat on a clean surface for at least 30 minutes to dry completely before sealing it in the provided envelope.

How do I return my sample?

Once the card is dry, place it in the protective sleeve, along with your demographic card, and return both using the prepaid mailer provided with your kit.

When will I receive my test results?

Your test results will be emailed to you within 2–3 weeks after the laboratory receives your sample.

How do I interpret my test results?

Your report includes:

  • The presence or absence of MNPs by size range
  • The calculated concentration (particles per milliliter)
  • A visual chart comparing your results across all detected ranges

This allows an easy comparison of your exposure level within broader testing data

What is a healthy or normal level of microplastics?

Ideally, your microplastic level should be zero. Your report will include a bar chart displaying how your results compare to all PlastiProof™ tests performed to date.

How often should I test for microplastics?

We recommend retesting every 3–6 months. This time frame allows for measurable changes after lifestyle adjustments, detox treatments, or changes in your exposure environment.

Is the test safe to use?

Yes. The test is non-invasive, painless, and safe. It uses only oral fluid and does not involve blood or needles.

Does the test diagnose medical conditions?

No. The PlastiProof™ test measures environmental exposure, not medical conditions. It should not replace professional healthcare advice or diagnosis.

Can children take this test?

Yes, children can take the test under adult supervision. The process is completely safe and child-friendly.

Can I use the test if I have dental work or oral conditions?

Yes. However, dental materials, mouthwash, or inflammation may slightly affect sample composition. For the best results, avoid oral hygiene products immediately before testing.

How accurate is the PlastiProof™ test?

Our laboratory uses calibrated microscopic and optical analysis for high precision. While results are reliable indicators of exposure, environmental and biological variability may affect readings slightly.

What happens to my sample after testing?

Samples are securely stored for quality assurance and may be used anonymously for research to improve testing accuracy. You may request that your sample be destroyed after analysis.

Will my personal information remain confidential?

Absolutely. All information is handled under strict data privacy and security protocols. Your identity and results are secure and shared only with you.

How is this test different from environmental microplastic tests?

Environmental tests analyze air, water, or soil samples, while PlastiProof™ measures direct human exposure through saliva — showing how much plastic is entering your body rather than your surroundings.
